Description

Print features a rustic scene with trees and birds and the words, “His eye is on the sparrow and I know He watches me” (line from a poem by Civilla D. Martin in 1905)

The Story

When COVID-19 descended in early 2020, life changed overnight. Stores closed, jobs cut hours, restaurants shut down. Panic seemed rampant — even over simple things like toilet paper!

While trying to stay sane in the midst of the daily chaos, God brought a familiar song to mind. I learned this hymn as a child and loved the words. The words (based on Luke 12:4-7) remind me of how closely God watches over and cares for each of us. This truth about our kind and loving God can comfort us through any crazy life brings.♥

The Inspiration

His Eye Is on the Sparrow
by Civilla D. Martin

Why should I feel discouraged, why should the shadows come,
Why should my heart be lonely, and long for heav’n and home,
When Jesus is my portion? My constant Friend is He:
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me;
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.

“Let not your heart be troubled,” His tender word I hear,
And resting on His goodness, I lose my doubts and fears;
Though by the path He leadeth, but one step I may see;
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me;
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.

Whenever I am tempted, whenever clouds arise,
When songs give place to sighing, when hope within me dies,
I draw the closer to Him, from care He sets me free;
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me;
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.

Refrain:
I sing because I’m happy, I sing because I’m free,
For His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.
